Women urged to promote gender equality

The president ofUnion of Journalist in south Sudan (UJOSS) yesterday urged femalejournalists who are holding senior positions in the media industry to use such platforms to advocate and promote gender equality in the country.
Speaking during the first day of a two-day orientation capacity building workshop,the President of the Union of Journalists in South Sudan Patrick Oyet said that the female journalists should make use of the media platforms to advocate and promote gender equality.
“We have very many female at the moment who are holding senior positions in the media sector. So what is needed now is for the women or females to build the capacity and use the platform. You have the platform and you control the media, but now you build the capacity and make use of the media in your hands,” he said.
Oyet appealed to the media houses, especially the broadcast media to change their house styles by introducing programs in the local languages in order to promote equal expression of issues by the citizens.
“I will be very happy if many radio stations in Juba could have a two hours program in Bari where you go down to the women who cannot express themselves in other language to apart from Bari to debate their issues whether being social or economic. Let them talk, give them the platform,” he said.
