Upper Nile University Staff to embark on strike

By Okan Thomas Onyango

The academic staff of Upper Nile University have threatened to go on strike if the government fails to immediately fulfill its responsibility of paying their seven months arrears.

The Chairperson of Upper Nile University Academic Staff Association, Prof. Dr. Pio Kur Deng said that failure by the government to fulfill its responsibility and obligation and be proactive to settle the resolutions, the academic staff of the university will embark on indefinite industrial action.

“This is the third letter we are addressing to the Ministry of Higher Education. We are demanding for immediate payment of seven-month salaries for (April and may for the fiscal year 2019/2020 and August to December for the fiscal year 2020/2021). Failure by the government to fulfill its responsibility and obligation and be proactive to settle the resolutions, the academic staff of Upper Nile University will go on a strike,” Prof. Pio said.

Prof. Pio added that the staff also demand for the immediate payment of annual ticket allowance for the fiscal year 2019/2020.

“In case the government does not respond to the two demands, we are going to lay down our tools for one week and this will be on Monday and if they will not fulfill their obligations within this one week, then we are going to automatically lay down our tools until further notice and this is a decision from the general assembly from the academic staff of Upper Nile University,” Dr. Pio supplemented.

He urged that it is difficult to justify working without regular payment of salaries and job motivation and that they are hereby bringing to attention, a matter of urgency and grave concern especially after waiting in vain for the reply of their two previous letters.

Prof. Pio further asserted that they had already written two letters to identify the request of the academic staff for payment of their seven (7)-month salaries for two fiscal years 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 but there has been no response to date.
