At least 386 illegal firearms in the hands of the civil population in three counties of Yirol West, Yirol East and Awerial counties of Lakes State have been assembled in Yirol headquarters of the defunct Eastern Lakes State.
Speaking to Juba Monitor, the secretary general Barnaba Mayor Deng said the greater Yirol civil population had responded positively to voluntary and peaceful disarmament exercise called by the governor of Lakes State Makur Kulang Liei.
“The local community chiefs, administrators and county executive directors of the three counties of Yirol West, Yirol and Awerial have already collected 386 guns from the hands of the civil population,” said Barnaba.
Barnaba said 150 guns have been transported so far to Lakes State capital, Rumbek meanwhile chiefs, administrators and executive directors are still collecting more illegal firearms from the civilians.
“We know only criminals who are wanted on list by the government because of crimes which they have committed, they are still at large with guns, but those who have not committed any capital crimes are responding positively to voluntary and peaceful disarmament in three counties,” said Barnaba.
Barnaba appeals to the youth from the three counties to speed the process of surrendering illegal firearms to the government.
He said it will be their duty to make a report of those criminals who are at large with illegal firearms to the government of Lakes State.
“We know those criminals who are hiding themselves with guns. They are identified by names. They are not very many. So if they refuse to hand over their guns then we will report their names to the government,” said Barnaba.
