UNMISS impact of deploying forces in the Central Equatoria

Anna Nimiriano Editor in Chief Juba Monitor

The statement published yesterday in the media houses said that the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is going to deploy forces along the Central Equatoria State to prevent civilians from unnecessary attack and killing, may be the idea would  help or not at this moment.

For the reasons that there were many incidents had happened in various areas and UNMISS didn’t take actions on how to prevent civilians attacks. All those killings and violence were occurred in the presence of UNMISS officials in the country. In the incident of 2013 December, the fighting started in Juba and it affected other states within the country while UNMISS was around. They were protecting their staff and may be other important people in the country but not civilians.

Nevertheless, the innocent people were killed in the cross fire including women, elderly people and children. In 2016 incident between the bodyguards of President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar in which thousands of people were killed and others were displaced  within the country and in the neighboring countries, UNMISS was unable to deploy troops within Juba to prevent civilians during those critical fighting.

Addition to that there were many killings that had happened in the states,  like the killings of  Paramount Chief in Abyei and others just to mentioned few. Several times civilians were ambushed along Juba Kaji-keji roads, Juba-Yei, Juba-Nimule roads by unknown gunmen and currently with the forces of National Salvation Front (NAS) all those occurrences were noticed by the UNMISS. For me UNMISS had left big gap during those years for not rescue the situation like what they have suggested. May be now with the signing of peace deal, they though what had been happening will not supposed to happen during the peace time, that is why they want to rescue the situation at the ground.

On the other hand, it was the failure of the government to control security in the country. There are some killings happened at night and others were during the day time in Juba where is UNMISS protection.  Above all the government has to end the civil conflicts in the country with the support of UNMISS and other international bodies for peace. The forces of Gen. Thomas Cirilio are to come home for peace. There is no need for them to continue causing insecurity in the country. Those persons his forces are killing are relatives and friends to them. In revenge on the side of the government also South Sudanese are the ones being killed.

However, we are killing ourselves which is wrong in front of God. Let us observe peace and come together for nation building.

  May God bless us all.
