The Health officials did not give a specific number of deaths but said the rate was alarming.

The spike in the death cases in Bentiu was not clear but Bentiu town has so far recorded a case of coronavirus which was reported some weeks back within the Protection of Civilian Site.

Dr. Wamala Joseph Francis, WHO country’s Preparedness and International Health Regulation (IHR) Officer told reporters during the weekly coronavirus briefing that they were investigating the trend in Bentiu to figure out the cause

“In addition to monitoring the cases, we are also carrying out the same exercise to establish  the number of death in the locality. We are already receiving data from two sites from Bentiu and PoC,” he said.

He said there was an indication of an increased number of deaths due to respiratory problems.

“We have encouraged the medical team and partners there to submit samples from people who have died, so that we can determine the cause. If it is really COVID-19 or not,” he said.

“We are monitoring the trend, we actually have discovered a trend that we are still investigating to determine if the rise in death is due to other restrictions or due to COVID-19

He said that other partners were also intervening in the PoC since the population was dense.

“The rise of transmission is high and if the infection is established, it can spread so quickly, we will have more burden of infections as population is suffering from malnutrition and others,”

He said there was also fear that mortality rate would be high in such setting

Dr. Thuou Loi, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of Health said that they were doing all what they could to improve the response in the country.
