Transport problem in Juba

Transport is becoming one of the major problems citizens are facing in Juba these days. If you go to any bus station in the market, people are suffering in getting means of transport. If they see any bus coming from any direction, they run after it to find out where it is going. Sometimes the bus cannot stop in its station, it stops far away, and still passengers run after it to ask the driver where the bus is going.

One day I asked one of the drivers, who did not want his name to be mentioned why there is shortage of transport in Juba. He said it is the issue of fuel.

He further said some petrol stations have no fuel that is why there are few buses operating at the bus parks.  However, this situation has made transport fares to increase from time to time in each location, because there is no control from the government.

Last month the drivers of Noah (taxi) were charging one person SSP15 from custom to Juba bus stations; currently they are charging SSP 30.  Before three weeks ago, the bus fare from Konyo-konyo to Munuki 107 was SSP15, now it has increased to SSP 20.

Last Saturday we boarded Noah from Gudele last station to Lou medical hospital, the driver told us one person is to pay SSP 20, after we reached Lou, he said he was going to custom, we asked him how much he would charge us, he said SSP20, after we reached custom he said was going to Konyo-konyo, again we asked him how much was the busfare to Konyo-konyo, he said SSP 20.  At the end some of us paid SSP 60 from Gudele last station to Konyo-konyo market.

However, previously Raksha from Juba Teaching Hospital to custom market was SSP20, now it has increased to SSP 30.

One of the Sundays I was at Juba bus station waiting for transport, somebody came by a small car and shouted “Munuki 107, Munuki 107 one person is SSP 40.”   Some people complained about the fare, others ran and boarded the car. They didn’t care about the fare, they just needed transport to take them to the place where they wanted to go.

The worst is that sometimes government cars are being used for public transport. I don’t know whether the bosses are aware about it.

Never the less, the busy times where there are a lot of people waiting for buses at the stations are from 7:00am to 10:00am, when students are going to schools, working classes are going to the offices  and businessmen and women are going to their business places. In the evening, it is at around three to five o’clock, when they have finished work in the offices and students too have finished their classes and are waiting for transport to go home.

If you take boda-boda, they demand a lot of money even if the distance is not long. Charges for short distances is at less from SSP40 and above.  One day I asked a boda-boda man why they charging customers a lot of money, he said the living condition is high that is why they too increased the rate of boda-boda fee.

One day I was at Konyo- konyo bus station waiting for transport, people were struggling to get their way in to the bus, one of them sat on the seat, and one of the persons said he has already booked the seat. The two gentlemen started pulling themselves, at the end they fought. People were looking at them, one of the guys at the station separated them and talked to them in a good manner, after sometimes they reconciled.

Never the less, the situation of transport has created difficulties to some workers. They cannot go regularly to the office due to too much expenditure on transport especially those working in the government with irregular payment of salaries.

The situation has forced some people to walk long distance instead of waiting for transport which is not available. It has also forced some individuals to reach office late and return home late after work.

Therefore, the concerned authorities should supply each petrol station with fuel to allow bus drivers to get fuel with reasonable price, so that it can reduce transport cost.
