STATES, Finally a breakthrough
By Kidega Livingstone
The main principal parties to the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) have finally reached a consensus over the long awaited states’ allocation following agreement between President Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar.
According to the Minister for Presidential Affairs Nhial Deng Nhial, the incumbent government would take Northern Bahr El Ghazal, Warrap, Lakes, Eastern Equatoria, Central Equatoria and Unity states.
The SPLM-IO was given Western Bahr El Ghazal, Western Equatoria and Upper Nile states. The South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) takes Jonglei State.
Speaking to journalists in a press conference at the state house yesterday, Minister for Presidential Affairs Nhial said the agreement followed the parties’ meeting last week on Saturday.
“I am happy to announce that following a discussion in a meeting that was conducted on Saturday 13th 2020, his Excellency the President and First Vice President have now agreed that the states of the Republic of South Sudan shall be allocated among the parties signatories to the agreement,” Nhial said.
President Salva Kiir in mid-February this year dissolved the 32 states and reverted the country to ten states.
And since then parties had continued to disagree over which party should take which state resulting to failure by the parties to establish the states’ governments.
Minister Nhial said other issues related to power sharing would be discussed.
“With this development, it has opened a way for new development and the time that has been lost, we shall be able to recover it in terms of the implementation of the agreement and move the country to the end of transitional period,” he said.
He said the parties would conduct consultation to agree on the nomination of the governors.
“It will not take long, it will be done quickly and very soon the names of the state governors will be announced,” he said.
“After today, things will move very fast, the reconstitution of parliament will not take time, the nomination is ready; it is only a matter of sending the names.
