Sports a tool for peace building

The Secretary General of Jubek State Basketball Association, Paul Wel has called on the government and partners to support sports in the country, saying it was a vital tool for peace building.

He made the remarks during the launch of the MTN JSBA 2017 Play-Offs Basketball Tournament at Juba Basketball Stadium on Thursday.

The tournament is sponsored by MTN South Sudan under the theme, “Building Sustainable Peace and Reconciliation through Basketball”, and was scheduled to kick off on 19th May ends on 2nd June.

Teams expected to participate in the tournament include; Nimra Talata, Al-Hilal, Malakia, Warriors, Citizen, Black Stars, Munuki and National. The teams are set to play three games each. The winners will progress to the fourth round, semi-finals and the finals thereafter. The top three teams will be awarded medals and the winner a trophy, according to the officials.

“Sport is a tool for building sustainable peace and if South Sudanese youths are well developed through it, then they will be peaceful,” Wel said.

James Macho, Head of Commercial department of MTN explained that, the tournament is aimed at promoting development of basketball in the country and to bring delight to fans across the country.

“The Play-Offs tournament underscores our corporate commitment to uplift the standards of basketball in the country. Supporting Basketball will go a long way in identifying and developing talent that has potential to compete in the International standards like the NBA Championships,” Macho said.

Jubek State Minister of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Salah Rajab Bunduki said sports was a pillar that unifies people, promotes unity and peace.

He said that the tournament is a golden opportunity for youths to participate in a peaceful environment and reiterated his ministry’s commitment to promote sports in the State.

He further extended his gratitude to MTN South Sudan for sponsoring the tournament and called on the company and others to develop sports in the State and in the country as a whole.

Lt. Gen. Augustino Maduot, the President of Jubek State Basketball Association said sports are tools that promotes unity and sustainable peace and creates a perfect avenue for youth to be ambassadors of peace.

“If we invest in sports then we can eradicate tribalism and hatred in the country, tap nurture and develop the talent of youth in the country,” he said
