More than thirty South Sudanese’s referees selected from nine local Associations are to take part in the three days online workshop organized by the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA).

The aim of the training is to equip referees with the new amended laws of the game and how referees can stay fit during the period of COVID-19.

In an exclusive interview with the South Sudan International Referee, Malong Ring said that South Sudan referees have never had FIFA training since 2018 till the outbreak of COVID-19 and especially after the changes to the new laws of the game as such affecting the fitness of both local and international referees.

“We last had FIFA training in 2018, so we are doing combined workshop for two years 2019 and 2020 to back up what we missed in 2019 and this workshop will tackle the changes to football laws especially law Number 1 (Goal post), law 11 (ON/Offside rule), 12 (misconduct and fouls) and law number 14 (penalty Kick),” Ring said.

Ring stated that South Sudan International Referees will benefit from the training especially after they have been off field for more than five months during the period of COVID-19 as African Cup of Nations Qualifiers are schedule to take place at the end of the year.

Meanwhile the President of South Sudan Football Association Mr. Francis Amin encouraged the participants to take the workshop serious in order to remain fit and upgrade their technical skills as the Association is working with various stakeholders to resume sport activities in the country.

“Take this training seriously in order to upgrade your technical skills before the resumption of football activities after long lockdown,” he added.

The instructors for the workshop are Jerome Damon Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Development Officer, Jason Damoo CAF Referee’s Instructor for the laws of the game and Nasreddine Cherifi instructor for physical fitness.

South Sudan currently has six international referees in Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) list.
