At least 17 people have been killed and more than 17 wounded in an inter-communal fight in Rumbek North County of Lakes State.
The fresh clashes which occurred on Saturday and lasted till Sunday took place in Malueth area.
Speaking to Juba Monitor, Marik Nanga Marik, the former speaker of Western Lakes State Legislative Assembly representing Rumbek constituency said seventeen people have been killed in the inter-communal fight.
“The clashes were caused by the cattle that were raided from Manuer section of the neighboring community. This angered Manuer section to kill two people from that community while they were traveling along the road,” he said.
Marik said when this community learned about the dead the members killed along the road they immediately retaliated.
Johnson Makol Makauc, youth activist condemned the incident and urged the government to carry out disarmament in Lakes State.
Makol said the youth shall finish themselves through gun violence if they are not disarmed; adding the security in the area was worsening each day.
He appealed to humanitarian organizations to provide assistance to most vulnerable women and children who fled the attack.
“Everybody who is escaping inter-communal violence between the armed youth was running toward Rumbek capital and the area is likely to remain empty,” Makol said.
