At least Fifty-three women and seven men in Yambio of Western Equatoria have successfully completed six weeks training on women, peace and security.
The training organized by WHITAKER Peace and Development Initiative through the auspice of UN-women, was drawn from different residentials of Yambio County.
While addressing the media, the project coordinator for WHITAKER in Western Equatoria State, Daniel Monde, said that sixty trainees will be dispatched to twelve zones in Yambio County to disseminate peace massages.
“I encourage you [trainees] whatever topics you have covered, it will not be enough when you sit on them without translating them into activities that positively impact on the community where you come from, so that South Sudan can be known as peace loving Country”. Monde said
Meanwhile a representative of the trainees, Christine Faida said that if the Country has to attain durable and long-lasting peace, women’s involvement was crucial to peace process.
“We have learnt negotiation and mediation techniques, leadership skills, conflict resolution. As we go out there, these topics will help us change the mind set of our communities to live in peace and have sustainable peace. I am appealing to UNGOs around and our government to extend more support towards women’s empowerment in the State because women are peace makers”.
However, the undersecretary in the Ministry of Peace Building,Pia Philip Michael underscored the importance of women’s participation in peace building because they value live. Michael believed sustainable peace, co-existence and development could only come from the grass root if women were fully recognized in peace initiatives.
“I have no doubt that you will transform the community of Western Equatoria. Transformation begins with one single step with a group of people who think the same way and you are that group today, fifty three women and seven men”. Michael said
