Over 160 rebels surrender to gov’t
At least 162 youths who joined the armed opposition in Jur River County earlier in February surrendered to Wau state government on Tuesday.
Speaking to Juba Monitor on phone, David John Pons the Minister of Information in Wau state said the youths had responded to the National Dialogue declared by President Salva Kiir.
“On Tuesday morning, we got a message from the youth informing us about their readiness to join the government. They were based in Wathalel,” Pons said.
“In this regard, the state government together with the national security received them and accommodated them at Masena Bira, Southern part of the state,” he said.
He said the government of the state accepted the defected youth as part of the National Dialogue to ensure all parties participated in the process to end the suffering of innocent citizens and return peace to the country.
Pons said the state government is planning to conduct a meeting with the group to see whether those who were in the SPLA before could go back to their former Units as well as the police and prison services while those who were civilians could be encouraged to return to their farming activities.
Earlier, it was reported that over 1000 rebels in Gbudue state defected to the government, citing the national dialogue declared by the President.
