OUR WILDLIFE SHOULD DEFINE OUR HERITAGE

By Paul Jimbo

Wildlife plays a significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of nature. The presence of wildlife affects the character of its habitat by continually supporting the evolutionary adaptations of everything in its environment.

South Sudan is endowed with massive wildlife that some countries across the African continent do not have.

Unfortunately instead of protecting these wildlife for national heritage, some of us have resorted to killing these animals for commercial and financial gains.

Today, South Sudan’s Bandingilo National Park hosts the second-largest wildlife migration in the world. While the Boma National Park, west of the Ethiopian border, as well as the Sudd wetland and Southern National Park near the border with Congo, provide habitat for large populations of hartebeest, buffalo, elephants, giraffes, and lions.

The importance of wildlife to a continued human existence has never been more obvious than it is today. In recent times, scientists and authors have begun to realise that wild animals are equally, if not more important than domesticated animals.

People have always had an awareness of the consumptive economic importance of hunting or trapping wild animals, but in recent times other non-consumptive

Wildlife is an important part of ecological community as wildlife play an important role in the environment.

Wildlife itself is an important character of nature so its conservation is an important obligation for human beings for the sustainability of life on planet.

Ecological value is the interaction of wildlife in nature. Wildlife plays an essential role in the ecological and biological processes that are yet again significant to life.

The normal functioning of the biosphere depends on endless interactions amongst animals, plants, and microorganisms.

Poaching and deforestation still remain a big threat to wild life conservation and this.

He says the wild animals were likely to migrate to the neighbouring countries if communities do not stop rampant cutting of trees.

This, in turn, maintains and enhances human life further. Wildlife maintains ecological ‘balance of nature’ and maintains food chain and nature cycles.

Many wild plants provide useful substances like timber, paper; gums etc and they also have wide applications in medicine. Wild animals Products include elephant tusk, rhino horns, tiger fur, leather etc.

Hunting and fishing are the most visible kinds of recreation that depend directly on wildlife resources.

There are, however, many other recreational activities that depend less directly on wildlife populations. These include bird watching, photography, hiking, camping, boating etc.

Most important contribution of wild life for human progress is availability of large gene pool for the scientists to carry breeding programmes in agriculture, animal husbandry and fishery.

Wildlife is the source of livelihood and subsistence. Due to existence of wildlife on earth humans get benefit to sustain life and examples of these include: hunting, fishing, and cultural value of wildlife.

Aesthetical value is the enjoying of wildlife’s beauty and pleasure. Wildlife enhances the beauty of environment.

To understand the imperatives of wildlife, wild places and the impacts of human society on their future it is important to save wildlife.

We need to live with nature in absolute harmony and this can be done by creating awareness among people about nature and its importance of life on earth.

It is also important to engage in wise, scientific, professional and caring stewardship of wildlife.

We further need to monitor wildlife population on regular basis and this would help us reduce the habitat fragmentation approaches.
