Opposition forces attack Government position in Wau

Authorities in Wau, former Western Bahr el Ghazal state said opposition forces allied to the former first vice president Dr. Riek Machar attacked government position over the week.

The government of Wau State accused the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) of attacking their position in the areas South West of the town.

Arkangelo Anyar Anyar, the State Minister of Local Government claimed that SPLA-IO forces loyal to Dr. Riek Machar put the people in panic after violating the cessation of hostilities agreement by attacking our position.

“It was last week when forces under the command of Dr. Riek Machar came and attacked our position. This indicates that there is violation of cessation of hostilities,” Anyar said.

He clarified that the armed opposition got the chance when the government was collecting guns from the hands of civilians in areas of Kuarjena County.

Kuarjena is a county in Wau state located along Tonj-Wau road.

Anyar said despite the unusual movement of opposition forces, the general security situation in the state is under control.

He expressed government commitment to ceasefire agreement signed in Addis Ababa.

The Minister further advised the civil population not to panic despite the ongoing rumors but encouraged them to continue with their normal activities.

He appealed to media houses in the country to send perfect information to the people in the state.

Heavy gunshots were heard from south west of Wau which made the citizens to panic in the state.

Attempts to reach the SPLA-IO military spokesperson for commence were futile at press time.
