The Governor of Warrap State Bona Banek Biar have vowed to push new efforts to bring peaceful co-existence among their people following a long standing inter-communal conflict encouraged by cattle raiding and other forms of violence that have mostly involved youth groups in the State.
Early this month, the Governor of Warrap State Bona Banek Biar formed a committee to engage the youth to make sure that people must come together regarding the incident which occurred on the 9th of August between South Sudan People’s Defense Force and civilians.
Speaking to Juba Monitor yesterday, the Press Secretary in the Office of the Governor, Albino Kuek Deng said that peace committee dialogue in greater Warrap as well as greater Tonj was aimed at strengthening youth’s capacities to totally address social conflicts and promote peace building.
They peace dialogue will allow both communities’ elders and youth to practice dialogue and capacity building, and to lobby for initiatives that lead to sustainable, inclusive and equitable development.
“The Governor formed the committee to engage the youth to lay down their arms voluntarily because youth realize that there is no benefit of being against one other when the country in peace. Yes the security situation in Tonj East County has calm following few incidents which occurred last two weeks between the civilians and South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF),” Kuek said.
Early this month a misunderstanding between civilians and the national army left more than 140 people reportedly dead and several others injuried.
