MP thrown out over fight

A physical scuffle between two Members of Parliament yesterday briefly interrupted the budget speech being delivered by the Minister of Finance and Planning at the National Legislature.
The incident happened midway through the speech of the Minister of Finance and Planning, Salvatore Garang Mabiordit when he was tabling the 2018/2019 fiscal year budget to a joint sitting by the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) and the Council of States.
Members of Parliament and some members of the public attending the session stood up to witness the scuffle until the two were separated by those near them.
The Finance Minister’s speech was briefly disrupted until TNLA Speaker Anthony Lino Makana called for order in the house to control the commotion.
He then called on the Guard of Honors to take the fighting MPs out of the house before allowing the Finance Minister to resume his speech.
Speaker Makana also ordered for camera men to delete all photos of the fight, saying “you are supposed to focus on the budget.”
Some Members of Parliament present in the hall during the incident identified one of the fighters as Hon Aleu Ayen Aleu, the former national minister of interior.
The second fighter was not identified by the Members of Parliament Juba Monitor spoke to.
Member of Parliament Alfred Taban who was present in the hall said the two might have fought over seats since the Parliament hall was overcrowded with both members of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly and members of Council of States.
“The hall was crowded because it was a joint sitting by the Transitional National Legislative Assembly and the Council of States. There was no sitting arrangement, even when I entered the hall, I even found the seat where I usually sit taken by somebody,” Taban said.
He said there was no indication that the two MPs disagreed over the subject of the day (the budget speech) but that it could have been a personal issue.
However, some Members of Parliament who did not want to be identified said one of the two fighters was drunk.
