Ministries tasked to plan for reopening of schools

By Elijah Akuei Ajou Ajou

The Ministry of Higher Education and Ministry of General Education and Instruction have been directed to reopen Schools across the country, Michael Makuei Minister of Information said last week Friday.

The announcement came following the meeting of Council of Ministers chaired by President Kiir.

The cabinet made the information public after the Ministry of Health reported that cases of the coronavirus has significantly reduced which makes it safe for reopening of the schools. Schools were shut down in March, after the virus was confirmed in the country.

“The cabinet has decided that all the higher institutions of learning and schools should be open and as to when, this will be determined by the Minister of Higher Education and Minister of General Education but schools should be opened,” Minister Makuei told reporters on Friday.

He also added that work would resume as usual, starting today at 8:30 am to 5:00 pm every day.

“Because if we don’t work our economy will continue to go down and collapse, so we must work to recover it,” Makuei added.

He warned all the civil servants to report back for work without giving lame excuses regarding the coronavirus situation.

The shutdown which was imposed by the government, due to coronavirus pandemic has negatively affected schools children which led to unwanted pregnancies and rampant early marriages among teenage girls as well as practice of drugs consumption amid school boys.
