Makerere University caught fire

Makerere University one of the oldest African University caught fire at midnight of Saturday.

It took nearly eight hours for the fire fighters to put off the burning flame.

The police said they are investigating the cause of the fire.

According to Dr. Barnabas Nawangwe Professor of architecture and Vice Chancellor of Makerere University on his official tweet saying “It is a very dark morning for Makerere University. Our iconic Main Administration Building caught fire and the destruction is unbelievable. But we are determined to restore the building to its historic state in the shortest time possible,”Dr. Barnaba twitted.

The South Sudanese former student of Makerere Ayuen John Awan told Juba Monitor on phone that Makerere University should have had a plan of shifting some key departments to a new structure for preservation of such historical institutions in Africa.

Awan added that he was deeply heartbroken for what happened to the University.   

“We can do nothing as Makerere family but to wish the entire University administration and students fraternity our heartfelt sympathy for what happened last night,” he added.

Awan described the incident as devastating.
