The leader of Sudanese’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) Dr. Riek Machar Teny is expected in Juba over the weekend.
The exact day for his coming is not known according to the reports circulating in some media outlets. Contacted for comment by Juba Monitor on telephone yesterday, Deputy Military Spokesperson for SPLA-IO, Col.Lam Paul Gabriel said Dr. Machar would come to Juba after meeting a team from UN Security Council in Addis Ababa.
“I really cannot confirm but there is information that he will come on Friday. Dr. Machar will come with UN Security Council delegation and that will depend on the result of their meeting in Addis Ababa,” said Col.Lam.
We know there is face to face program going on and the IGAD want to make sure that their meeting between Presidents Salva Kiir and Dr. Machar succeeds because there is pressure from the International community,” he added.
The Presidential Spokesperson, Ateny Wek Ateny said that the same information had reached their desk but could not confirm the exact day Dr. Machar would come to Juba.
“That is what we have on our desk but we cannot confirm when he is coming but what you should do is to confirm it from Tut Gatluak the Chairman of Pre –Transitional period because he is the one connected to them,” said Ateny.
The report from UNMISS indicated that delegation of the UNSC was expected to arrive in the capital Juba over the weekend.
Spokesperson of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Francisca Mold confirmed the development saying the delegation would be led by both South Africa and the United States to the country this Sunday.
The motive (s) of the visit was yet to be ascertained and whether Dr. Machar would fly in together with the delegation as reported to come and meet with Kiir face to face for the second time is not known.
