The leader of the SPLM-IO Dr. Riek Machar met a delegation of the IGAD Special Envoy to South Sudan Dr. Ismail Wais yesterday to discuss the remaining outstanding articles in the Revitalized Peace Agreement.
In a 30 second video posted on the official Facebook page of First Vice President, Dr. Wais said he had come to get updates on the implementation of the peace agreement.
“First of all, I have come to convey my New Year wishes and greetings to him and the people of South Sudan, I have also come to get an update on the status of the implementation of the agreement, and the issues that are really important to the peace agreement,” Dr. Ismail said.
Meanwhile, the SPLM-IO Director of Information and Public Relations Puok Both Baluang said in an interview with Juba Monitor that his chairman has reaffirmed his party’s commitment to implement the agreement.
“Dr. Riek Machar has conveyed to Ambassador Wais his commitment and that of the entire SPLM-IO to fully implement the agreement, they also discussed the issue of the formation of the states and the local governments and the appointment of Gen. Olony, these were the major issues discussed by the two leaders,” he said.
Speaking about the status of Upper Nile, Puok stated that the planned conference of Upper Nile communities has nothing to do with the appointment of the governor.
“The appointment of Olony ought to be prior to the conference so that he can attend the conference with the communities of his state, so that they can work out on how to reconcile themselves in the presence of their leaders,” he said.
Puok also reiterated their call to “his Excellency the President to expedite the appointment of Johnson Olony so that the state of Upper Nile will not lag behind from the other states of South Sudan.”
