Land issue needs urgent solutions

Anna Nimiriano Editor in Chief Juba Monitor

Yesterday it was reported that two people were killed in Gumbo –Sherikat clashes between government and community on the issue of the land dispute. The latest information Juba Monitor got from a reliable source was that the number of people killed was about nine and several were wounded. There was still tension between people within the area and the neighbouring villages.

It was unfortunate to get such a sad report in which many people were killed because of land matter in the country. The information further said that incident occurred between the committee formed by President Salva Kiir Mayardit to look at the issue of land.

Yet, it was not good for people to be killed with the issue of land from time to time. The committee formed by President Kiir was supposed to resolve the matter of land grabbing in an amicable manner.  Sometimes ago, there were government officials killed in Sherikat because of the same issue of land.

The land issue needs to be resolved by law, what is the law of South Sudan say on the issue of land. People cannot come and grab lands that have owners.  All those villages have chiefs and elders to solve the matter of lands. They will not be ignored in one way or another.

However, the matter of land grabbing reflect the bad image in the country, people were been killed with the issue of land several times in Gumbo- Sherikat. If the land belongs to the community, it is the responsibility of community leaders and chiefs in Payam and Boma to resolve the issue of land with the government. They should listen to the advice of community leaders in terms of land approval.  At the end of the day, the community have a full mandate on the lands’ issue in the states.

May God bless us all!
