President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday received a briefing on the general security situation in the country following a week of standoff surrounding the former SPLA Chief of General Staff, General Paul Malong Awan.
The ministers in charge of security sector briefed the President on the general situation in the country. They told the President that the general situation nation-wide was “stable,” despite some reports of minor incidents in different areas.
Speaking to the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC-Radio) following the meeting with President Kiir, the Minister of Interior, Michael Chiengjiek, said they briefed President Kiir on the security situation in the whole country.
He reported that the overall security situation was under control. “I want to say the country is calm, and the President of the Republic is very much concerned with the security situation in the country,” Minister of Interior, Michael Chiengjiek, told SSBC.
However, despite reports which suggested that security situation in the country was stable, last week, the army spokesperson, Brigadier-General Lul Ruai confirmed that a senior officer defected from the SPLA and joined the main armed opposition faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition(SPLM-SPLA-IO) led by the former First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny.
