President Salva Kiir, Dr. Riek Machar and other political leaders signatory to the Revitalized Peace Agreement have been invited for an urgent meeting by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The consultation meeting scheduled for the 8th of November would aim at evaluating and assessing the status of the implementation of the R-ARCSS and deliberates on the way forward with regard to outstanding critical pre-transitional tasks.
Speaking to Juba Monitor yesterday, the SPLM-IO Director for Information and Public Relation Puok Both Baluang confirmed the development. He said SPLM-IO team was ready to go and attend the meeting.
“The SPLM/A (IO) would like to confirm to members and the public at large that Dr. Riek Machar, Chairman and Commander in Chief of the SPLA-IO has officially received today November 2, 2019 an official invitation from IGAD to attend the consultation meeting of the leadership of the Parties to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS), that is scheduled to take place on November 8, 2019 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,” said Puok.
“We are delighted to receive the invitation to the meeting and also pleased to participate in discussions of the critical and outstanding tasks of the R-ARCSS because of its importance, with the aim of hopefully achieving a full and comprehensive and sustainable peace in our beloved country,” he added.
He said the SPLM/A-IO reiterates its full commitment to the implementation of the (R-ARCSS), in letter and spirit, as the only way to attain lasting peace in South Sudan.
According to other sources yesterday, the meeting will be centered mainly on the assessment of the September 2018 peace agreement and ways forward.
“We are worried that a transitional government may not be formed by November 12. So, we in IGAD would like to discuss this issue with all leaders of South Sudan,” explains the official.
“We know all the necessary provisions especially security arrangements have not been implemented. This is a problem,” he added.
President Kiir and Machar met on October 19-20 in Juba to try to expedite outstanding issues.
Dr. Machar earlier warned that he would not be a part of a unity government if security arrangements were not implemented.
