Kiir appeals for financial support

President SalvaKiirMayardithas appealed for financial support from the international community to, he said, enable the transitional government of national unity implement the Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (ARCRSS).

“One of our biggest challenges is lack of adequate financial resources needed to implement key provisions of the peace agreement,” Kiirsaid in awritten speech read by the Ministerof Justice and Constitutional Affairs, PaulinoWanawillaUnango at the celebration marking International Human Rights day in Juba yesterday.

Kiir said during the UN general assembly in New York, the First Vice President Taban Deng Gaihad informed worldabout the existence of the TGoNU, which he said faces lack of financial resources to implement the peace pact.

“Yes, this is the position of the government today.” Kiir said.

The president added that the government maintains bilateral and diplomatic relations with partners “who are here to help the government of South Sudan implement the peace agreement and ensure economic recovery.”

He said there is ongoing engagement between the government and “the countries supporting the peace agreement such as the Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, South Africa,United States, Norway and Kenya on the progress made in the implementation of the peace agreement.”

Kiirreaffirmedthat the government is committed to the implementation of the peace agreement despite “continued challenges.”
