Greater Jonglei to disengage communities from violence

By James Atem Kuir

The Governor of Jonglei State and Chief Administrator of Greater Pibor Administrative Area have agreed to immediately deploy community police to disengage communities from further violence as the High Level Committee headed by Dr. James Wani Igga seek to bring the communities into peaceful negotiation to resolve the root causes of the violence among the communities.

Speaking at a consultative meeting at Palm Africa Hotel yesterday, Chagor said they have resolved to straightaway deploy community police along the borders between the areas to deter further violence.

“We have agreed with Chief Joshua Konyi that there should not be any attack as we continue to find peaceful solution to conflict in the two areas. We will be engaging the communities along these areas so that no further attacks are carried out,” he told the meeting yesterday.

He pleaded with the community leaders to stop any people who might be planning to carry out revenge attacks.

“I am begging you to call back anyone trying to carry out revenge attack now,” he said.

He called on the humanitarian agencies to aid people affected by flooding in the Jonglei and Greater Pibor Administrative Area.

Jonglei and Greater Pibor Administrative Area have been experiencing inter-communal violence leading to the death of hundreds of people and thousands others displaced. An unspecified number of cattle, children and women have been abducted too.
