Girls have been encouraged to pursue careers in Information Communication Technology by the Deputy Director General of the National Communications Authority.
Ms. Tereza Siricio who spoke at the French Institute on Saturday pointed out that career in Information Communication Technology (ICT) could promote peace.
“Women constitutes majority of the South Sudanese population and they are by nature peace makers. If girls join ICT and use the career responsibly, they can promote peace in the nation,” Tereza said.
She warned young girls and women to be cautious while using social media to avoid exploitation, adding that girls had been misusing social media to the detriment of their studies.
According to William Haizaza, the Chairman of the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) ICT mobilizes people and it was useful in business. He however pointed out that, the digital divide was the major contributing factor to the underdevelopment of ICT in the country.
International Girls in ICT Day is backed by all International Telecommunication Union (ITU) member States, South Sudan being one. ITU aims to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider taking career in the global field of Information and communication technology (ICT).
