GESS SUPPORT FOR GIRLS’ EDUCATION COMMENDABLE

The reality of having or empowering women to fully participate in the economic development of the country will soon be realized if normalcy return to the country. We had in this column argued how and why women should be involved in the affairs of this Nation and pointed out the key role in the sector they can play best. It is with trust that with the support and generosity being accorded school age girl-child by donor agencies and local organizations are encouraging. On Monday this week an organization, Girls Education South Sudan announced that 215,000 girls of primary and secondary school going age and who are in the learning institutions will receive cash transfer to enable them continue with their education. Somewhere someone might not understand what this means to a country which is taking shape in development. It means that if this exercise is continued yearly for a period of five years, about one million girls will have been educated and would pursue further education in institutes of higher learnings like colleges and universities. It would also mean that the level of illiteracy is being reduced among our female population and still it would mean that the culture of marrying off or school dropout among girls reduced to the minimal. GESS and other like-minded organizations should be encouraged to empower the female population through education. Educated mind makes a formed decision in life. With the peace process in progress we are looking forward to have a well-informed society which includes our women folks. Education is the key to success and any successful country must have educated people as the backbone or foundation for the future generation. We must stand up and thank GESS and other institutions that are ensuring the positive development of education in the society.

NEW YORK ASSURANCE TO THE FVP SHOULD BE HONEST

Arising from an assurance from the fist Vice President, Taban Deng Gai on his official New York UN Assembly meeting where he had one on one on the sideline with the UN Boss Antonio Guterres who assured him to tell the country that the New York body had no intention whatsoever for regime change. The UN boss went further according to the FVP that the UNMISS and Regional Protection Forces (RPF) being deployed were for ensuring peace and development took the Centre stage in the country. So far so good but our common friend SaPT was reluctant to buy the assurance in wholesome until he could see with his own eyes the actual action as promised. He was weary that “once bitten twice shy”. He wanted to take the position of wait and see but could not because he equally had a mission and the interest of this country at heart. He wanted to be given and told clearly the mandate of the UN representation and if these include the sophisticated weaponries reported to have accompanied some of their units. Could he join the FVP in New York to hear from the horse mouth or should he wait and take the assurance as the gospel truth from our own representatives. He was divided. SaPT was reasoning that it was not the first these power-base had assured us of total peace support on to turn like chameleons through other agents and agencies for negative cause impacting into worse situation for us. He wanted Guterres to live to his word and not to play double game with the lives of the people of this country. What should be our main agenda on the menu is peace. With peace everything is possible and this is where we need “a friend indeed is a friend in need” SaPT was not opposed or against the move by the UN but only wanted to be sure that we are not being duped or taken for granted because as a sovereign country, we have our laws and constitution to guide us towards our goal. As we work for peace through the National Dialogue, which had been accepted and appreciated in many parts of the country and the world as the only recipe for the process of lasting peace in the country, we told him that a number of major foreign countries and investors were already willing to come back and continue helping in the peace process and economic development. It was another sideline talk with the FVP and these countries at the New York meeting that major Troika countries, the USA, Europe, China, Japan and Asia promised that they are willing to come back since there was a glimpse light of peace at the end of the tunnel. The only remaining action was to increase the speed to move fast and bring peace to the people. SaPT considered this his duty and wanted to be the driver on the wheel but we told him that he was too late he can only contribute effectively since the steering had been mandated to two co-chairs and the Steering Committee was already on the move.
