The SPLM/IO Leader Dr. Riek Machar accompanied by the Deputy Vice President of Sudan Ruling Council, Mohamed Hamdan arrived in Juba yesterday to meet President Salva Kiir Mayardit to discuss the outstanding issues and how to push on the on-going revitalized peace agreement.
Machar’s spokesperson Peter Manawa confirmed and told journalists at the Juba International Airport that last week the meeting between parties and the government did not break the deadlock on the outstanding issues
Manawa said Dr. Machar will be in Juba for three to four days to make consultations with the members of the Political Bureau, National Liberation Council of SPLM/A IO, other Political Parties, who are part of the revitalized peace agreement.
He said Dr. Machar stay will also include having time with civil society organizations, women groups, and youth groups, members of the national communities in Juba, and IGAD among others.
“We will have a meeting with IGAD here in Juba because they gave us ten days as deadlock for the next meeting between the parties to the agreement with the government regarding the outstanding issues, especially on the number of states and the boundaries,” Manawa said.
Manawa revealed that they had not reached a conclusion on the number of states saying, “We agreed in the meeting when the Deputy President advised us that parties should come with their proposal and asked SPLM/IO to come with 10 states upward and the government with 32 states downward.
“We agreed on the 21 states but added two more states which brought the total number to 23 states plus the one which is Abyei” Manawa said.
He said all the parties agreed on the 23 states plus one but the government insisted on going up to 51 states.
“Without handling the issues of the number of states and the boundaries, SPLM/IO would not be part of any government,” Manawa added.
