Coronavirus testing facility set up in Bor

A new coronavirus testing facility is being set up in Bor town of Jonglei state, the Ministry of Health confirmed.

This brings the total testing points across the country to four.

While addressing the press during the coronavirus weekly briefing on Sunday in Juba, Dr. Mathew Tut, the Director of Emergency Operations Center (EOC) announced the installation of Gene-Xpert testing machine in Bor to test the cases of coronavirus.

“We are pleased to inform you that Bor is now onboard by testing the COVID-19 cases using the GeneXpert machine,” he told the briefing.

He said it was being used to test coronavirus samples especially the alerts and contacts.

Dr. Tut however revealed that the Health Ministry was planning to decentralize the testing using the Gene-Xpert machines across the country.

“We will make sure that more seven centers are operational hopefully in the coming two weeks. These include Wau, Malakal, Bentiu, Torit, Yambio and Yei,” he said.

“Those are the areas where we are planning to decentralize the testing using the Genes-Xpert and the interest is to test the minimal number of samples since Gene-Xpert test less numbers in a day,” Dr. Tut said.

Dr. Tut reiterated that the machines being set for testing in the States will be used for critical alerts being reported and those requesting for medical evacuation.

“So this will be the strategy for the testing per now, and if we secure more cartridges, then more testing will be done,” he said.

Currently, South Sudan has only four Coronavirus testing Centers in the country, with the biggest center being the Public Health Laboratory in Juba.

Others include Nimule Mobile Laboratory in Eastern Equatoria at the border of Uganda and the UN Clinic that tests COVID-19 using GeneXpert cartridges as well.

As of Monday, South Sudan coronavirus cases stand at 2,305 among which 1,190 are recoveries as fatalities hit 46.

Jonglei State has recorded roughly 51 cases since the pandemic broke out in the State.
