The overall commander of National Salvation Front (NAS) under the leadership of General Thomas Cirilo in Kapoeta State has defected to the government.
Addressing reporters in Juba yesterday Major General Simon Carlo confirmed defecting to the government with all his forces from the NAS movement and joined the government following long negotiation and talks.
“I have come with my advance team of a total 12 in number and there are about 25,000 forces on the ground in Kapoeta State who will soon come to Juba,” Maj. Gen. Carlo said.
According to Gen. Carlo, he was coming home to implement the peace agreement and to reconcile with the grievances that had come up at the local government in Kapoeta State.
“We have come to find a solution to our problems. Solution to our problem cannot be given by foreigners but it is within us,” he said.
Gen. Carlo said he was responding to the grown grass root peace initiative that the government had undertaken to restore lasting peace in the country.
The presidential press secretary, Ateny Wek Ateny, commended Maj. Gen. Carlo for responding to the amnesty that had been declared by President Salva Kiir.
He said it was a courageous step to be taken by Major Gen. Carlo to defect from NAS in order to join the country for meaningful peace.
“I would like to welcome the forces of Maj Gen. Carlo for coming to the country to ensure that they put their grievances down in peaceful manner instead of violence,” Ateny said.
“This is a good step of stopping violence that Carlo has taken. To the people of South Sudan peace is near and close to be signed to free the citizens from the crisis,” he added.
