CEPO welcomes Pope Francis’ visit to South Sudan

The Executive Director for Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has welcomed His Holiness Pope Francis who set to visit South Sudan in July this year.

Last week, the Apostolic Nunciature from the Vatican Embassy Mser Lonut Paul announced the visit. This was confirmed by the Catholic Archbishop of Juba His Grace, Stephen Ameyu Mulla who announced the visit on the 4th March, 2022 and this was confirmed by the South Sudan Government presidential affairs minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin saying the decision by the head of the Catholic Church is not only an honor to President Salva Kiir Mayardit but for the people of South Sudan who have endured the brunt of the 8-year-old conflict.

Yakani said Community Empowerment for Progress Organization welcomes this announcement, it is timely and offers a great opportunity for addressing the hardship for transitioning the society from violence to peace. This visit provides space for our leaders to practically demonstrate to His Holiness Pope Francis what they have done in translating His Holiness Pope Francis’ Kiss on their feet for peace.

“The visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to South Sudan will really expose our leaders’ political attitudes to the society and world. Our political leaders need to meet and take decisions for implementing some motivating actions for transitioning the country from violence to peace before the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis in July 2022. Among the key motivating actions are holding proposed leaders retreat for making decisions on genuine implementation of the transitional security arrangements, proper and well-prepared environment for the conduct of credible national elections, delivering the proposed reforms in since manner, prevention and mitigation of the deadly armed communal violence, rolling out transitional justice without political restrictions, improve the humanitarian working environment and ensure civic space is shrinking,”

He added that the leaders should give themselves time to do some concrete success stories on transitioning the country from violence to peace for sharing with His Holiness Pope Francis during his visit. Implementation of R-ARCSS and Resumption of Rome Peace Talks are the two milestones that require concrete action before 5th to 7th July 2022. It is time to demonstrate for our leaders to demonstrate political maturity for embracing peace and stability. Mr. Yakani stressed
