Bright Stars off to Kampala for CHAN Qualifier
The national football team, the Bright Stars yesterday set off to Kampala, Uganda ahead of their upcoming game against Burundi.
The team under the leadership of the new coach Ashu Cyprian Basong will have to prove their fighting spirit to get their first competitive win against Burundi, a country that is fresh from participating in this year’s AFCON. Burundi didn’t progress beyond the group stage but will hope to field a strong CHAN side to ensure qualification for the 2020 showpiece.
The team that gathered at Konyokonyo left by bus and will link up with their coach Ashu who flew to Entebbe in Kampala.
The Bright Stars will be in Kampala for a week’s training camp for the first leg of the CHAN qualifications before they leave for Bujumbura, Burundi for the match scheduled for 27 July.
After the first game, the team will not return to Juba as they will stay in Kampala to wait for the second game that will be played in Kampala, Uganda on a date yet to be communicated.
Uganda will host South Sudan’s home games since Juba Stadium; the only stadium with standards to host international matches is still under renovation.
According to Amar Abdallah the head of delegation, the travelling delegation comprises of 21 players and 3 officials. 6 other players of Atlabara will join them in Kampala.
In the other fixtures, South Sudan’s hosts and neighbors Uganda will face Somalia and the winner of this tie will face the team that progressed between South Sudan and Burundi.
Cameron will host the 2020 CHAN, a competition restricted for only players plying their trade in their domestic leagues.
