A senior Catholic cleric has urged all parties to the conflict to stop violence and work for peace in the country.

Bishop Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala, the Catholic Bishop of Tambura-Yambio said there was need for armed men to denounce what he dubbed as “unusual killing” of innocent South Sudanese.

The cleric made the comments last week days after mourners were attacked at funeral place in former Western Equatoria state, Yambio. An act the Bishop condemned and termed it as “pity hour.”

“I am appealing to the warring parties to denounce conflict and work for peace. Let those armed men stop killing innocent people and bring peace in South Sudan”, Bishop Kussala said.

He said there is unusual situation of people being killed, tortured and displaced in their own places even residential areas.

Bishop Kussala stressed that the war has got no benefit to any community and added that what works is dialogue.

“As a church we believe in dialogue. We only build peace through negotiation with one another,” he said.

The cleric added that peace is the way to heal one another, not ‎wound one another. Every civilian will have a chance to share views through talk.

He called on the parties to the conflict to respect civilians urging them not to turn against them.

Bishop Kussala earlier described Peace building activity as a “journey” and not a destination.

“How you welcome new people at village, community, school, how you deal with conflict among your friends, and the daily decisions you make about how to react to frustrations and disappointments, you can also apply these commitments to tackle bigger problems you see in our nation,” he said adding that being a peacemaker means working with others to put these ideas to work toward bigger challenges.

Bishop Kussala further said, “We are never defined by our past but our present, as no matter ‎how hard the past was, you can always start again. We wish to forget the wounds of the past and ‎move ahead towards peace.”

Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kusala is the Catholic Bishop of Tombura, Yambio and the Chairman of Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference (SCBC) as well as the Chancellor of Catholic University of South Sudan.
