Basketball Team to participate in Wild Card Tournament

South Sudan basketball senior men’s team will compete in this year wild card tournament to be hosted in Yaounde, Cameroon after World basketball governing body Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) granted one more team to qualify into the AfroBasket 2021.

The tournament will place between 23rd-25 October and South Sudan will play against Cape Verde, Chad and Zimbabwe. Group winners from the wild card tournament will qualify into the second round of FIBA AfroBasket 2021 in group E along Uganda, Egypt and Morocco.

The teams will participate in the two tournaments of the international Windows with the top three teams from each group automatically advancing to the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 to be held in Rwanda.

The AfroBasket 2021 will be the 30th edition of the AfroBasket, a men’s basketball continental championship in Africa. The tournament is to be hosted by Rwanda. It was scheduled to take place between 17 and 29 August 2021, but it was moved back a week due to the COVID-19 pandemic, to 24 August to 5 September 2021.

In the 2017 AfroBasket qualifiers tournament, South Sudan took part in Zone 5 Group A, with Egypt, Kenya, and Rwanda.

 Lost to Egypt by 11 points (87-76) in the first match on 12 March. Two days later register their first victory in group stage against Kenya by 2 points (68-66).lost the last match by 10 points (80-90) to Rwanda.

South Sudan basketball men’s team is ranked 107 in the world ranking above Zimbabwe who occupy position 137 while Cape Verde, Chad are ranked 104 and 97 respectively.

The South Sudan national basketball team represents the country in regional and international matches. It was established in May 2011, and became a member of FIBA in December 2013.
