Armed robbers loot Catholic Sisiters’institution

The Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI) compound in Gurei has been reduced to nothing after a group of armed robbers broke into the compound and robbed all assets worth millions USD on Thursday last week, Sr. Jeny Maila Country Director of Daughters of Mary Immaculate, a Catholic Institution in the country said.

Sr. Maila said the stolen items included: 10 laptops, 18 mobile phones, 4 digital cameras, two megaphones, televisions, 1 land cruiser vehicle, food stuffs, hard dishes, printers, golden rings and 300,000 South Sudanese pounds.

Speaking to Juba Monitor on Saturday, Sr Maila said they had decided to postpone most their programs as they have left vulnerable since all the property and money were all looted by the armed robbers.

“At the moment we are very stranded because most of our equipment including  money were all taken,” she said.  “As I talk, we were supposed to have big function that was scheduled to bring school pupils and mothers together, but we have postponed it due to lack of fund,” he said.

She said the armed robbers were four in number, “they ordered us to give them money while they continue to collect some of the valuable  properties,” she said.

Sr. Maila said when the incident took place, the police officer who always guards the compound claimed that he was outside at neighbourhood taking tea though food and tea are often provided to him within the compound.

“On Thursday morning at around 9:30 am as we were preparing to go to the IDPs.  So, we immediately saw some group of armed men entering into the compound,” she said. “They ordered all of us to enter into one room and lay down,” Sr. Maila recounted.

“We didn’t know what was happening outside and we could see them collecting mobile phones, computers and other things and they told us to go to the sister’s house where they threatened us  to give them money,” Sr. Maila added.

She said one of the thieves was outside the gate to watch out if security personnel would come to rescue them and  immediately after he saw the police vehicle he released a bullet in the air and his colleagues who were inside the compound immediately parked the properties they looted  into a Land Cruiser  and them they took off.

She said the police rescue were unprepared since they had only one gun and which made it impossible for them to follow the thieves.

Sr. Maila said they reported the case to the police.
