SPLM-IO, Hints at Kiir-Machar meeting

A face-to-face meeting between President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar is possible this month, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition representatives in Juba has confirmed.

Col. Lam Gabriel however confirmed there will be face to face meeting between Kiir and Machar adding Opposition committee will be going to meet their leader to discuss the meeting.

“That has been to the call of the IGAD for them to have face to face meeting. But as far as the location is concerned, I am not aware and that is at the leadership level. There is a delegation of our professionals going to meet him and discuss that,” Col Lam said.

“But the most important thing is the face to face meeting but I do not know where it will take place. Whether he is going to come here in Juba or not, I do not know. But as far as face to face meeting is concerned I believe it will happen,” he added.

Last month, IGAD had called on the two leaders to have face-to-face meeting to discuss the fate of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

Dr. Mawien Makol, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and international Cooperation told Juba Monitor on phone yesterday that his office had not received information about Riek’s meeting with President Kiir in Juba.

”No, no I cannot confirm, I don’t know. You can talk to him to confirm. I am not sure whether he will come or not,” Dr. Mawien said.

Last month, the government denied that President Kiir had no any planned meeting with Dr. Riek outside the country saying if the late wanted to meet the President, he should come to Juba and his security will be guaranteed.

In July this year, civil society organizations and international communities called on the two leaders to meet regularly to develop culture of trust and togetherness before the formation of the transitional government.

Two solid months and few days are left to the formation of the unity government comes November 12th this year.

But according to Ceasefire Transitional Monitoring Security Arrangement Mechanism (CTSAMVM) board last meeting, some key provisions of the agreement were yet to be fully implemented including Chapter Two of the security arrangement.
