Probe recent killing along Juba-Nimule Road

By Omuno Mogga Otto

On the 9th of July every year, South Sudan celebrates its independence anniversary. However this year’s Independence Day was celebrated with a gunshot incident along Juba-Nimule Road.

A passenger vehicle from Nimule to Juba was sprayed with bullets by an unknown gun man. The incident happened half the 185 milometers stretch Juba-Nimule highway.

Reports indicated the vehicle the vehicle frequently plies the route as a public service vehicle. The driver of the ill-fated car and some passengers sustained serious gunshot injuries.

The incident happened at a place called Loa, an area before Bagari Center on the way from Nimule to Juba.

Even as authorities investigate the incident, such cases should no longer be heard of or happen in a country keen on implementing a peace deal.

Investigators should narrow down to possible reasons of the attack and provide possible solutions to avoid similar incidents in future.

Security on the Nimule-Juba Highway had become better following the signing of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

Since 2016, security personnel have been escorting all the passenger vehicles including light ones traveling on the road.

This improved the security situation on the road as people are travelling without fear. The recent incident should have not been allowed to happen more especially at the time of peace building.

The government should investigate the matter. Peace building is a process that needs more efforts from the government to improve security.

On the highway there are more than three army barracks established. The barracks mainly stationed in Jebelen, Kerepi, Loa, Pagari and other parts.

They are placed there to improve security of the road. The armies are put there to monitor the security of the road. They are not there to eat or drink only. They are deployed in those places to support security.

The security team should investigate the army officers based around Loa area. Part of the role of the army deployed along Juba –Nimule Highway is to protect civilians traveling on the road.
