Major step towards peace and unity

        Robin Saban

The worlds’ newest nation, South Sudan, has been struggling to bring peace and unity. Very recently, the president of South Sudan, his Excellency General Salva kiir Mayardit and the main opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar, shook hands in Juba and decided to move forward for the long awaited peace agreement to be put into action to end the suffering of the South Sudanese people.

Too many hands have been meddling to fuel the fire, but the leaders of South Sudan and the president of the Republic of South Sudan, His Excellency General. Salva kiir Mayardit, are working very hard in every way to end the conflict and move this new nation forward.

As an outsider and a good friend of South Sudan I think this conflict is internal problem and that they will solve it among themselves sooner or later. Our sincere expectation is that the conflict should be solved quickly to avoid the humanitarian disasters such as food shortages, medical needs, and crime against women and children as well as to the elderly.

Very recently, the President of the republic reshuffled the government and one of the most important things he did was to appoint a woman to a very important position. The President General Salva Kiir Mayardit appointed his former Gender Minister, Mrs. Awut Deng Achuil to become the new Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

This move shows that President Salva kiir Mayardit is drawing a new image for his country and is showing the world that his nation is ready to take its place in the international community as a peaceful country.

The new Foreign Minister, Awut Deng Achuil has a very hard job in front of her and she is well aware of that. I am sure she will set up her cabinet with a visionary, experienced staff and will do a great job for her country, South Sudan, and will surely achieve success.

She will bring a new image to South Sudan and the international community should embrace this female politician. By doing that, Hon. Awut Deng Achuil, will become a role model for young South Sudanese women.

One of the most important tasks in front of Hon. is that, she has to work hard to remove the sanctions off the back of South Sudan as well as to open a new chapter for the country in the International arena. The sanctions have been implemented on South Sudan for a reason and those reasons should be revisited and should be reconsidered so that the Republic of South Sudan must rethink their polices and move forward with their country once and for all.

I hope the international community will reconsider its decision about the sanctions on South Sudan and give a new chance to the government of South Sudan to rebuild their country as soon as they can.

In conclusion, I am optimistic for the future of The Republic of South Sudan. I think appointing a woman as a leading politician from a country like South Sudan is an excellent opportunity for the countries in the region.  I hope this political move will be a role model for other African countries as well. It is the right time to help in any way we can the Republic of the South Sudanese Government to speed up the recovery process of the nation from their civil war.

With that in mind, I wish Awut Deng Achuil all the best in her new endeavor and I have no doubt that she will serve her country full heartedly.
