The leader of the main opposition group, Sudan People’s Liberation Movement In-Opposition (SPLM-IO) Dr. Riek Machar has declined President Salva Kiir’s invitation to Juba before the end of the Pre-Transitional period.
On Friday last week, President Kiir invited Dr. Riek Machar to Juba for formation of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGNoNU) as stipulated in the revitalized peace agreement.
Kiir, Machar along other political opposition factions signed the revitalized version of the 2015 agreement in September last year in Addis Ababa to end the five and half year civil war in the country.
The SPLM-IO Director for Information and Public Relations Puok Bok Baluang told Juba Monitor that their leadership had called for additional six months for the purpose of implementing the unexecuted chapters of the agreement.
“We called for the extension of the Pre-Interim Period for additional six months for the purpose of implementing the unexecuted provisions in the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan such as chapter two (the security arrangements), determination of the number of states, the constitutional amendment committee and others,” Baluang said on Friday last week.
The Security Arrangements, Determination of number of states and the constitutional amendment are still some of the unexecuted chapters in the Revitalized agreement. The unity government is supposed to be formed on May 12.
