South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has ordered for the release of the Former Spokesperson of Dr. Riek Machar James Gatdet Dak .
The President announced the release of the prisoner yesterday during the peace celebrations held at the Freedom Square commonly known as Dr. John Garang Mausoleum.
“Today, I am announcing the release of two people one is James Gadet Dak who was sentenced to death”, Kiir said yesterday.
James Gadet was charged for treason and incitement against government.
Gadet was deported to South Sudan from Kenya in November 2016, a move that rights groups and the United Nations said it was a breach of international law.
The High Court handed Gadet Dak the death sentence on 12th February this year as well as 21 years for incitement and conspiracy against the government of South Sudan.
President Kiir, however, promises recommitment to implement the Revitalized peace agreement and urged the opposition groups to do the same.
The revitalized agreement signed in September and the Cessation of Hostility Agreement signed in December last, the parties were to release all political prisoners and prisoners of war prior to the formation of next Transitional Government.
Following the signing of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), Kiir issued a decree for the release of all political Prisoners and Prisoners of War as per the agreement.
About two weeks ago, the International committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it facilitated the release of 24 detainees in Wau.
There has been also report of release of other detainees in Gbudue State who were in government detention cells.
