Dr. Riek Machar is set to come to Juba by the end of this month for a meeting with President Salva Kiir following invitation by the United Nation Security Council (UNSC).
However, the actual date for the meeting is yet to be fixed and made public.
A team from UNSC is expected in Juba at the same time to see and evaluate the peace process which is to forge the way ahead of the formation of the government of national unity.
The SPLM-IO spokesperson Pout Both Baluong who is also the Director for Information and Public Relations confirmed to Juba Monitor in a phone interview that Dr Riek had accepted to come Juba for the meeting though there was no clear date when it would take place.
“We have not been informed of the fixed or exact date but we have expressed our acceptance to be part of the meeting because peace is what we want and peace is what we are for. Any initiative that brings peace is welcomed”, said Baluong
He further explained that the coming of Dr. Machar to Juba would be determined by the UNSC who had extended the invitation.
“Our team is ready to come to Juba anytime as long as the meeting will push for the implementation of critical issues such as the states, security arrangements and amendment of the constitution. We have made it very clear that we will not be part of any revitalized government that will be formed in November without the implementation of this three critical issues”, Baluong said.
Last week David Shearer the Head of UNMISS while addressing the press in Juba revealed that the UNSC had expressed willingness to come to Juba and see the stutiation.
“The Security Council signaled its strong desire for the momentum of the peace process, so much that they are travelling as a group to South Sudan towards the end of this month to see the situation on a first hand basis and to put their weight behind the political process”, he said
He also revealed that UNMISS was looking forward to support their trip.
The formation of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity is expected to take place on the 12th of November 2019.
