Administration of Dr. John Garang Memorial University of Science and Technology has hinted at the possibility of reopening the university in two weeks time.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Wani Lado Worja, revealed this in an interview with Juba Monitor yesterday.

Prof. Worja said the University might open within two weeks since the administration was working hard with the Ministry of Higher Education to reopen in the academic year.

The University’s opening was suspended last month over feeding challenges.

Prof. Worja said there were still outstanding issues the government needed to rectify and settle with the contractors.

“Dr. John Garang University is opening when it finalizes with the contract for students’ feeding,” he said.

“I can assure you that we may reopen the university immediately as soon as we finish with the contractor. It may be opened within two weeks from now,” he added.

On Monday, the government confirmed that operational expenses worth over 10 million SSP were wired into public varsities’ accounts to run them for about two months.

Minister of Higher Education Justice Yiel Oral Lam revealed to the press  that each University had received operational expenses, out of which Dr. John Garang University got three million SSP.

Prof. Worja said that the operational expenses pumped into University’s account were not meant for feeding program since the opening was suspended over contractor’s reluctance to feed the students.

“The contractor is the one supposed to feed the students and up to now the government has not finalized our problem with the contractor,” he said.
